Yoga and Personal Development

A series of retreat days spring/summer 2012 with Louise Cashin

Working with Patanjali's Yoga Sutras chapters 2 verses 41-43 to creatively craft three Yoga Retreat Days Louise invites you to relax and rejuvinate at this very special place.

These retreat days will be held at the amazing new learning centre at Herons Bonsai near Lingfield, Surrey. www.heronscentre.co.uk
Saturday 10am- 5pm, each day will consist of –

  • Talk /discussion around the theme of the day
  • Chanting, energy cleansing and Pranayama
  • Music, movement and Asana practice exploring the theme of the day
  • Relaxation and Meditation

Saturday April 21st
"Yoga and Clarity"

Patanjali Yoga Sutra Chapter 2 verse 41 "There is no temptation to flit from one thing to another. This is concentration and control of sensory perceptions and actions- the vision of the very essence of Being. The vision is clear in any situation. Purity, physical as well as mental, is an important aspect of evolution toward true self realization" translation Bernard Bouanchaud

Theme: Good health habits, evenness of mind, thoughts, speech and discrimination. Being clear in our actions both towards others and with ourselves.

Practice: How clear are we in our ability to practise Yoga within our own capability and not push beyond what is healthy progress? In our asana practise can we be alert without tension and relax without slackness or are we constantly pushing then collapsing? Can we practise on our Yoga mat in a way that brings us true clarity and a sense of ‘wholeness’ that we can take off the mat into daily life?

Saturday May 19th
"Yoga and Contentment"

Patanjali's Sutras chapter 2 verse 42 "Contentment is a dynamic and constructive attitude that brings us to look at things in a new way. It calms the mind, bringing a flowering of subtle joy and inner serenity that are independent of all outside influences and perishable things" translation Bernard Bouanchaud

Theme: Gratitude and joyfulness; a state of mind that does not depend on any external status. It is a practice of choosing love over fear. Following the adage "Accept that which we cannot change, Change what we can, and have the wisdom to know the difference"

Practice: Do we practise Yoga on our mat with joy and a sense of fulfilment? Can we take that into our daily lives? We will explore how we can practise Yoga in a balanced harmonious way and take what we learn on the mat into our daily life to bring us more happiness and contentment day by day.

Saturday June 16th
"Yoga, Enthusiasm and Courage"

Patanjali's Yoga Sutra Chapter 2 verse 43 "..Keeping a good balance, first physically, then mentally, by being disciplined about food, sleep, exercise, work and time for thought. We manage both the quantity and quality of our energy. Healthy body and mind efficiently fulfil their roles as tools and prepare the way for consciousness in its plenitude and the awakening of the heart" translation Bernard Bouanchaud

Theme: Do we lead a balanced life? Here we are exploring Patanjali's principle of "Tapas" which is about determination to pursue daily practices that develop spiritual awareness, making sacrifices as necessary, having enthusiasm for the spiritual path. Giving yourself fully to your dharma (your life's mission). Developing courage, strength and simplicity. Long sitting meditation is a disciplined practice – physical heat is generated, which "burns" the outer layers away to reveal the true inner spirit.

Practice: In our Yoga practise are we only attracted to what is easy or fulfils some sensory or ego based desire? Or can we be at ease and equipoise with those things that try our patience; with those practises that we find difficult and require a disciplined approach? Do we have courage to extend ourselves beyond what is comfortable? How can we bring this into our daily life and what has this to do with our 'life's purpose'

Suitability: Students with one year's regular yoga practice up to teacher level. Teachers/trainee teachers please consult your course tutor as you may be able to use some of the days hours towards your CPD or teaching points for your diploma as we are working with Patanjali's Sutras specifically Niyamas in action.
